Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
