Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
